New Jersey governor quits, comes out as gay - James E. McGreevey

I am presently reading James E. McGreevey's, former governor of New Jersey, autobiography: The Confession. In which he details and chronicles his secret homosexual life.

I am extremely impressed with his candor and honesty.

I do not believe that, still, in the year 2007, in America, an African-American male, would HAVE the courage to write a book of this caliber.

He speaks of the oppression and suppression of which he experienced and was subjected, and his own repression, due to homophobia in America.

I saw him interviewed on Oprah, Larry King, and Johnny Deustsch. I completely identify and relate to his life experiences as homosexual in homophobic America.

I, too, am reading this autobiography.

I am a 43 year old African- American female who discovered that her mate of 18 years was a closeted homosexual. For the most part, he carried this "secret", if you will, to his grave. He died of Aids.

I have read other books on homosexuality. Those books, however, in my opinion, only discussed homosexuality topically.

I have always understood that my mate remained closeted because he felt that he would be shunned by our homophobic society. I do readily admit that there was a time in my life that I, too, was homophobic to some degree. It wasn't until I began to read and educate myself that I began to understand and laid my homophobic attitudes to rest

In reading Mr. McGreevy's autobiography and hours of discussion with a homosexual freind, I have now come understand homosexuality and my mate's struggle in a totally different way.

I have recommended this book to several of my friends and would do so to anyone who trying to educate him or herself on homosexuality. The "fog" surrounding the topic of homosexuality can only be lifted through education of this subject.
