CNN Daily News Clips: Gay in the NBA - John Amaechi

I signed on to AOL tonight, and saw this news posted on the AOL "splashscreen" regarding former NBA player John Amaechi, the British NBA center playing for the Utah Jazz about his new book where he says he is gay.

"There is no reason black people and gay people should be divided." - Former NBA player John Amaechi responding to negative criticism for admitting he is homosexual.

John Amaechi is a MAN. He is standing on priciple ...And truth.

"A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything." - Malcolm X

This has been in the news quite a bit recently. I'm sure he's not the only professional athlete who is gay, but I applaud him for his brevity in coming out. Would that the others should be as courageous. At the end of the day, it is the taboo surrounding homosexuality in particular and sexuality in general that perhaps prevents others to do the same. As a gay man, my "gaydar" is rather keen in picking up signals, but I dare not drop names of other professional athletes whom I suspect of being homosexual. To do so would amount to mere speculation and gossip.

To: Mr. John Amaechi

I stand corrected...

You are a Black man possessed of the courage, and wherewithal to write a book concerning your homosexuality.

I admire and respect you for it...

PS

You big sexy, handsome man... LOL

Tim Hardaway has done himself a great disservice.

I personally, do not find him attractive.

He's obviously disregarded his homosexual and bisexual male (and female) following...

His statements are ignorant...

It has reverberated among society like a sonic boom.

Again, another prime example of the homophobia in America...

...And exactly what HAVE homosexuals done to him? To warrant his ire...

He's accomplished attracting the attention of every gay rights organization in America, nothing more, with his specious statements...

Now, he's issued and apology?

What does that mean? Empty rhetoric... You thought it... you said it... you did it... you meant it...

He can't retract that vitriol he spewed... and he called on God?

Where does God and theology say hate? Hypocrite.

Tim Hardaway needs some serious sensitivity therapy...

...And true theological insight.

I agree with John Amaechi's response...

Kevin this is what I am, et al, subjected to, being homosexual in America...

What I also fail to comprehend, is why Tim Hardaway is unable to see the correlation/parallelism in the Civil Rights/Black movement and the Gay Rights movement.

Racist Caucasians resound the same sentiment: that African-American's don't belong in America...

I'm ashamed to be identified as a Black man, when Tim Hardaway is what is representative of us.

I once admired him… I now HAVE no respect for him…

I'm also a homosexual man, and I HAVE equal and every right to reside in America as he.

I was on my way out the door to work this morning when I heard this, "I hate gay people....I don't like to be around gay people....I let it be known.........yes I'm homophobic........".
I was shocked and taken aback. I mean damn!!!!! Why don't you tell us what's really on your mind Timmy.

When I got to work and turned on the radio, hostess Troi Tyler, of V103 radio, had listeners call in and give their reaction and opinion to what was said. The reactions and opinions were mixed, but, from what I could surmise, most found the remarks way out of line and some, male and female, questioned Hardaway's own sexuality, duping him as a possible latent homosexual.

I would label those remarks a bit more than out of line. I am appalled and saddened. I am not, however, surprised. Unfortunately, there are a great number of people that feel the same way Tim Hardaway does. Not many are as willing to, as ole Timmy did, show their blatant ignorance. I know that people are entitled to their opinions, I am not trying to strip anyone of that. It is very sad, in my opinion, that in 2007 the phobias and "isms" surrounding race, sexuality, etc, etc, still exist in the way they do. When are we going to, for once and all, lay our outlandish ignorance to rest?

I have heard in news reports this evening that Mr. Hardaway has offered an apology. To this I give an elongated lololol. In the words of Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams, "too much, too little, too late......". Much emphasis on the "too little, too late". Once hateful, hurtful, and vile comments are made they can not be taken back. When are we going to learn that you must think, ever so carefully, if I may add, before we speak? Even more so if you are in a role of prominence.

Tim Hardaway, can kiss my hairy high yellow homosexual ass. Now, homosexualize that.

This insincere apology he has issued...

Keep it...

"As an African-American, I know all too well the negative thoughts and feelings hatred and bigotry cause," Hardaway said Thursday in a statement issued by his agent. "I regret and apologize for the statements that I made that have certainly caused the same kinds of feelings and reactions.

That is not what those malicious statements he made reflected.

...And someone had to word that apology for him. Imbecile.
